On Wednesday, November 14, the upper elementary students traveled to Charleston to sail on the newly launched Spirit of South Carolina. Modeled after an 1879 schooner, this tall wooden ship worked as a pilot ship in Charleston’s harbor during the final decades of the nineteenth century. In addition to taking MSC students on the ride of their lives, the field trip integrated their studies in science, geography, historical fiction, and South Carolina history. After helping to raise the sails, the students participated in classes about weather, simple machines, and life aboard a nineteenth century schooner. Learning about hardtack, scurvy, and hot bunking made the students appreciate their own food, good health, and shelter. What lessons could be better for the Thanksgiving season?
